Review: Afternoon Tea at Voyagers Liverpool

Set in the lovely Ropewalk’s district of Liverpool, Voyagers at The Halyard offers an excellent, modern interpretation of Afternoon Tea that reflects the city’s diverse culture and culinary tastes. It’s an excellent representation of the contemporary, laid-back feeling of the city and the hotel’s surroundings, with a stylish, plant-filled space, floor-to-ceiling windows, natural light, relaxed ambience, and a sleek yet refined atmosphere.
The Afternoon Tea at Voyagers is served between 12pm and 5pm daily, in either “The Garden Room”, a bright, contemporary space with indoor greenery, plush velvet seating, or the “Voyagers Restaurant & Bar”, where soft lighting and exposed brickwork make a sophisticated dining space that harkens back to the city’s industrial past.
Voyagers’ most recent Afternoon Tea menu looks at the city for inspiration, offering a well-executed, inventive representation of the region and its identity. While there was no shortage of delicious items on the menu, one of the clear stand outs was the “Scouse Sausage Roll”, well-seasoned pork decorated with small pieces of carrot and potato, wrapped in a flaky pastry – a subtle nod to the Scouser’s namesake “Scouse”.
The Salt & Pepper Chicken slider brings the heat with a light spiciness, balanced by sweet onions and peppers, doing well to evoke the nation’s takeaway favourite. Other savouries include a delicate smoked salmon sandwich, and a cheddar and chutney finger sandwich.
Two scones are served warm, accompanied by a generous portion of delicious, clotted cream, and an Afternoon Tea classic in Tiptree Wilkins & Sons Preserves. The scones are fresh and light and serve as a traditional anchor within a modern menu.
Yet again the Liverpool influence was clear with the sweet treat selection. The “Strawberry Fields Macaron”, a nod to The Beatles classic, is what I feel to be the centrepiece of the menu’s sweet treat selection. It offers a crispy yet smooth strawberry flavoured macaron with delicious mellow cream. On the other side of the plate, The Everton Tart offered a playful twist on a regional classic, with its mint-infused cream topping. The tart base was buttery with a fine crumb, complemented by the cool, peppermint finish of the topping – reminiscent of an Everton Mint, but reimagined in a modern dessert. The Liverpool Tart is a tried and tested classic, easily deserving its place on the menu. It features a sharp citrus filling with a buttery pastry case. A dusting of sugar balances the tartness of the lemon, offering a bold, palate-cleansing flavour.
Guests can choose from a selection of loose-leaf teas by Brew Tea Co. or coffee by local roasters Crosby Coffee, Multiple refills are offered throughout, and tea is served in a modern glass infuser pot, with matching ceramic cups. We tried both the tea and coffee and found that the classic breakfast tea was as delicious as ever, and coffees were both tasty and well prepared, both with a side of biscotti.
Throughout our visit the staff were attentive and professional, checking in at regular intervals, while demonstrating the friendliness the city is famous for.
Afternoon Tea is priced at £32.50 per person, with optional upgrades including a bottle of prosecco (£23) or champagne (£60).
