Review: The Montague on the Gardens Afternoon Tea

by Tsui Chung

Discover a charming traditional Afternoon Tea minutes away from the British Museum. Take a break from exploring the city and relax amongst a pleasant private garden surrounded by Georgian townhouses.

Arriving at the hotel we were greeted by the doorman who kindly checked in coats, before leading us through the regal lobby towards the Afternoon Tea rooms. We were seated in the conservatory overlooking the gardens. It was a beautiful day, so the space felt very bright and open.

First drinks were served, and there was no threat of us being thirsty! We had water for the table, and I ordered a glass of champagne. This was followed by a pot of the English Breakfast and the flowering tea. The flowering tea was captivating as it bloomed in front of us. They also provided timers so you can have a perfectly brewed cup of tea.

The Afternoon Tea was brought out shortly after, and in all its glory had its own stand right next to our table. As you can imagine my eyes immediately lit up at the sight of the dessert plate. It was colourful with a wonderful array of different sweet items. You’re probably thinking how you would share an item between two, well every item in this Afternoon Tea is unlimited, meaning you can ask for refills on both the savoury and sweets. That’s practically unheard of!

The sandwiches were a delight with every mouthful having a generous filling-to-bread ratio. The stand-out was the smoked salmon rose sitting atop of the horseradish cream and rye bread. The salmon had a smooth and buttery texture that really complemented the airy cream and chewy-but-tender rye bread.

There were two types of scones - traditional plain, and fruit, with homemade strawberry preserve and clotted cream topping. The scones were buttery and flaky, and best of all, served warm so I highly recommend not saving those for last!

Finally, the desserts were very impressive, not only delivering on presentation but also on taste. Favourites included the white chocolate and lavender choux, the tiramisu and the pistachio macaron.

Overall, this is a perfect Afternoon tea if you’re looking for friendly service, inviting and delicious food located just around the corner from the British Museum!
